1. Encoding: Actively taking in information into our memory sytem

   • Storage: Maintaining information in our memory system
     • Retrieval: Recovering information stored in our memory system

2. Sensory Memory

   • Very brief, unproccessed storage of sensory information brought in by the senses
     • No analysis, no awareness
     • Iconic Sensory Memory: Visual Modality
       • Sperling (1960)
         • Pps in whole report procedure could only recall 4-5 letters despite insisting they saw more. Partial report pps could recall the requested line with perfect accuracy.
           • The visula stimulus fades quickly from iconic memory, had to scan, identify and store each letter in STM. This took time and the image was fading, explains why they could only recall 4-5.
     • Echoic Sensory Memory: Auditory Modality
       • Temporary storage for sounds that have just been percei3.ved; about 4 sec in duration
