Started because of the King
- Gave bits of his land to nobles so it was easier to manage.
- All the people he loaned to had to swear loyalty to him, provide military aid, give advice, and pay a fee.
Started a three tiered structure to society.
- King on top. Powerful lords (dukes, counts) middle. Vassals and peasants bottom.
- A noble could loan land if he had enough power. And if a vassal had enough power he could loan land as well.
- ANy person who is loaned land from anyone still has to swear loyalty, provide military aid, give advice, and pay a fee.
