1. INCREASE OF VICTIM CULTURE: More focus upon the victim, early on it was rare for the victims characteristics to be referred to. However after 1980s common practice

   • 1945-1964 out of 112 crimes, there was reports of 86 victims
     • 1981- 1991 140 stories and discussed 171 victims
       • The Mirror

           • 1945-1964 99 stories and it covered 59 victims
           • 1981- 1991 63 stories and 56 victims
           • Reader is lead to empathise with victim, as opposed to before
           • The marketing strategy and news source activity of individual newspapers play a significant role in shaping content
   • Pain and suffering of a victim has also increased within cinematic film since 1945

2. Media becoming more critical of the police

   • Reporting of police deviance increased.
     • Also reflected within film too.
       • Only odd heroic individual
   • Decline in reported 'cleared up'' crime

3. Changing nature of crime stories

   • ACCUATE THE NEGATIVE: Increased reporting in crime news stories, since 1960s crime as out of control and threatening
     • reporting on property crimes, since 1945 has decreased
       • Also reflected in cinema films since 1945
     • Offender as evil, not part of social relations: Attempt to understand offenders is deemed as insensitive to victims

4. Overall, crime is now reported as a huge risk, more common, highly charged and emotional, crimes are framed so public can identify with victim.

   • WHY the change? Due to broader political, economic and cultural transformations
