The 19th century has been referred to as the "Long 19th Century", but some historians. The years 1789-1914 being more meaningful than the unpredictable period of 1800-1900.

Dominate forces in European history can be seen as reaching a peak of sorts in the years leading up to 1914; specifically nationalism, industrialisation, militarism, science and imperialism.

Europeans, substantially, considered themselves the principal society to which all others should aspire. However, while these forces held within the promise of widespread material prosperity and "progress" they also held the potential for conflict and disparity. It was this latter course that Europe took in 1914.

As one of the greatest milestones in history, World War I produced social, political, and economic change of enormous scope and proportions. It is, nonetheless, important to not let the sheer scope and scale of the change blind us to significant elements of continuity between the pre-1914 and post-1918 world.
