About The First World War

GoConqr Original

What the unit covers

The resources follow the war from its origins to its aftermath. For the road to war, there are mind maps on the Schlieffen Plan, the Balkan wars and the Bosnian Crisis 1911, plus several on the causes of WW1, from alliance systems to the arms race. Flashcard decks cover the Moroccan crises and the Black Hand gang.

The Western Front

This is the busiest part of the page. The notes on the British sector of the Western Front 1914-1918 explain the trench system and the nature of trench warfare. The slide set Western Front - Illness and Disease and the mind map Medicine on the western front look at wounds, infection and care. There are also maps on the Somme and Passchendaele.

Home front and peace

Beyond the fighting, you will find mind maps on the role of women in WW1 and the home front, and a World War I Propaganda Practice quiz that asks you to study a poster and its techniques. For the ending of the war there are resources on the Armistice, the Paris Peace Conference and the Treaty of Versailles.

Where to start and how to combine tools

  1. Begin with a broad mind map such as Causes of WW1 to get the outline.
  2. Read a note, such as the one on the British sector of the Western Front 1914-1918, to fill in detail.
  3. Take a quiz, such as The Western Front 1914-1918 Quiz, and see which answers you missed.
  4. Go back to the matching map and flashcards for those gaps.

Some resources name exams such as GCSE History, A-level History, National 5 History, IB History, AP European History and AP US History, so look for the one that fits your course.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with a mind map on the causes of WW1 for a quick outline, then open the notes on the British sector of the Western Front 1914-1918. Once you have the basics, try The Western Front 1914-1918 Quiz to see what you remember about trenches, gas and the Somme.

What do the mind maps cover?

There are over 2,200 of them. They cover causes such as alliances and the Schlieffen Plan, the Balkan wars, trench life, medicine, the Somme, Passchendaele, the home front, women's roles, the Armistice and the Treaty of Versailles. Each one breaks a topic into short branches that are easy to scan.

Are these resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource on this page is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, maps, flashcards and notes.

Which levels and exams do they suit?

Almost all the resources are at secondary level. Some mention exams such as GCSE History, A-level History, National 5 History, IB History, AP European History, AP US History and AP World History. Check the title and content of each one against your own course before relying on it.

Is there anything on the peace settlement?

Yes. You can find a Treaty of Versailles Quiz, a mind map on the terms of the treaty, notes on the peace treaties after the war, and a quiz called The Peace Treaties after WW1. There are also resources on the Paris Peace Conference and the Armistice.

What if I can't find the topic I need?

Try a nearby resource first, such as a broader mind map or a set of notes on the same period. If it still isn't there, you can build your own quiz, mind map or flashcards with a free account and keep them for revision.
