  1. Online Communication

    • In this presentation I will define, with examples, what these key terms mean:
    • Online community
    • Network of friends
    • Virtual world
    • Netiquette
    • Chat
    • Chatroom
    • Blogs
    • Microblog
    • Wiki
  2. Online Community

    • These are a community that exists in a virtual world. This is an unreal world which is created by the computer and does not exist in the real world. Some communities need users to be involved at the same time, such as some online gaming, whereas others can have users interacting at different times, such as a forum or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
  3. Network of friends

    • A network of friends is a group of people online that share similar interests with each other. This could be a Football club page discussing travel they need to get to the next football game or possibly talking about the last game. They would have to have to keep up-to-date contact with the others in the group aswell.
  4. Virtual World

    • A virtual world is a computer-based simulated environment populated by many users who can create a personal avatar, and simultaneously and independently explore the virtual world, participate in its activities and communicate with others. An example of this is World Of Warcraft.
  5. Netiquette

    • This is the set of rules to which users should conform when online. It is short for net etiquette. This would include not using capitals (as it means shouting), appreciating privacy and not making unkind comments. An example of this is in club penguin, if you swear you can get your account banned.
  6. Chat

    • Chatting is an exchange of messages, often typed, between users at the same time (in real time). This could be Facebook messenger or whatsapp. It can also be communicating with some within a group.
  7. Chatroom

    • A place on the web where users can communicate, usually through typed words (users online at the same time). This can be found on club penguin and other sites. If you have a large group, you may then have to use a chatroom.
  8. Blog

    • A blog is an online journal or diary. They will be updated almost every day and will show the persons thoughts and feelings within the blog. There is also a new type of blog called a vlog. This a video blog and is very popular on Youtube and there are youtubers that just do video blogs.
  9. Microblog

    • This can be a website or an app that short messages are exchanged. This can be found on twitter and are restricted to 144 characters (144 letters).
  10. Wiki

    • a website that provides information that visitors can edit and extend if something isn't quite right or needs to be in more detail. It allows users to share information and are extremely useful for research. However, check your research as it may have been edited with false information. An example of this is Wikipedia.
