CHAPTER 8: Social Class & Social Stratification

cheenee.m Sociology Tertiary English 6 cards

Cards in this deck (6)

  1. 1Define "SOCIAL STRATIFICATION". Describe the 3 major systems of stratification.Social Stratification:
is a system of structured SOCIAL INEQUALITY.
    3 major systems:
ESTATE - property ownership, elite controls resources
CASTE - one's place is ASCRIBED (inherited). Class hierarchy is rigid.
CLASS - one's place can be changed/ACHIEVED. More open than caste.
  2. 2How does KARL MARX explain inequality CAPITALIST SYSTEMS?Marx's analysis outlines TWO primary classes
    -The Capitalist Class
(middle: petty bourgeoisie - interest of capitalist but don't own means of production)
    -The Working Class
Capitalism (means of production to earn profit) was the basis for other social institutions and therefore The Capitalist Class would advance than the others and a sense of inequality is reinforced.
  3. 3How is Max Weber's explanation of SOCIETAL INEQUALITY different from Karl Marx's?Weber had a 'multidimensional' view of social stratification as he did not see the economic force as the primary dimension (like Marx did).
    He saw 3 dimensions:
    1) class - the economic dimension
    2) status/prestige - cultural/social dimension
    3) party/power - the political dimension
  4. 4How is INEQUALITY functional for society?Functionalists believe that inequality serves a purpose in terms of cohesion as each part work together through cooperation.
Upper-class roles (e.g. govt, investment, management) are essential for a smoothly run society.
Overall inequality motives people to fill the different roles in society that are needed for the sustainability as a whole.
  5. 5What are the types of SOCIAL MOBILITY? Give examples.Social Mobility:
refers to a person's transition from one class to another over time. It can be either up or down.
    INTERGENERATIONAL:
    social mobility occurring within generations
    e.g. a daughter surpasses fauther.
    OPEN CLASS SYSTEMS:
social mobility is based on ACHIEVEMENT.
(closed class: social mobility is virtually impossible)
  6. 6How does UPWARD MOBILITY show that class 'origins' continue to influence one's social experience?Studies found that highest upward mobility rates are related to WHITE MEN, then WHITE WOMEN (then black men, and black women).
This shows that the dominant race of origin still comes into play when mobility is present.
