Biology
Cards in this deck (15)
- 1What is diffusion? The net passive movement of particles
- 2What is respiration?The action of breathing
- 3Explain photosynthesisThe process green plants use to make food from the sun
- 4List the levels of organizations in the bodyCells, tissue, organs, systems, organisms, populations
- 5Give an example of each organizationRed / white blood cells, muscle tissue, the heart or liver, the digestive system, humans and the human race
- 6What is the difference between veins, capillaries and arteriesArteries have thick muscular walls & thin lumen, veins have a thin muscular wall and a thick lumen, and capillaries have very thin, one cell thick walls & can respire
- 7What is energy measured in in food?Kilojoules or calories
- 8What are the constituents of food?Carbohydrates, Proteins, fats and minerals
- 9What are the functions of each constituent?Carbohydrates provide us with energy, fats or lipids provide us with insulation, minerals provide us with vitamins and protein builds our muscles and help us grow
- 10What’s the difference between the new and old food pyramid?Top shelf has been split, vegetables and fruit are on the bottom, carbs have been moved up, servings have been changed
- 11Why do we eat food?Fuel for energy, raw materials for growth and repair, helps to prevent disease
- 12Explain the term “enzyme”Amylase, a protein in saliva is an enzyme which is a chemical that is produced by living things to speed up chemical reactions in their bodies
- 13Why do we need a circulatory system?Delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells, the heart pumps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood on different sides
- 14What was William Harvey’s theory about blood circulation? That the same blood was being circulated through the heart again and again
- 15Explain circulationOne side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs. Here, the blood collects oxygen and leaves behind the carbon dioxide, blood then returned to the other side of the heart, then pumped to the rest of the body
