Flashcards
Evolution Cont. (1)
Cards in this deck (9)
- 1What evidence for evolution does soft-part & hard-part morphology show?-The overall structure of nervous tissue and muscle tissue in vertebrates and invertebrates is the same.
-The Overall skeletal structure in mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish is the same. - 2What evidence for evolution does embryology show?-Vertebrates all have embryos that have very similar appearances.
- 3What evidence for evolution do homologous parts show?- Structures derived from the same part of an embryo but may have different functions
Ex. Bat wings, Mule's front legs, walrus front flipper.
Ex. Human arm, cat legs (front), whale front flipper. - 4☼ What evidence for evolution do vestigial organs show? ☼ (What are vestigial organs?)- Small organs or parts that appear to have no function and are in the process of disappearing.
Ex. Canine teeth in humans, snake leg bones, whale hip and leg bones, side toe horse bone. - 5What does breeding (artificial selection) do? How does it show evidence for evolution?-Induces rapid evolution
-Humans can cause change in animals through breeding. Nature does the same thing slowly. - 6How does antibiotic-resistant bacteria support evolution?-Bacteria diseases evolve rapidly, so they are difficult to keep in check.
- 7What does evolutionary convergence show?-Similar body forms in unrelated organisms.
Ex. Shark (fish), Ichthyosaur (reptile), Porpoise (mammal) - 8How does the fossil record & Transitional fossils support evolution?-#1 best evidence for evolution
-Fossil record clearly has documented evolution over billions of years.
- Every fossil is a transitional fossil. (even using most restricted definition, there are many transitional fossils) - 9What are some transitional fossils?1. Archaeopteryx (1/2 bird; 1/2 reptile)
2. Tiktaalik (1/2 fish; 1/2 amphibian)
3 & 4. Oysters and horses.
