Flashcards
ACT 2 SCENE 1
Cards in this deck (2)
- 1Lines 71 + 73 (Relationship between Polonius and Laertes)Polonius: "Observe his inclination in yourself."
"And let him ply his music."
*He is ordering a spy to look out for his son but not to keep him from harm; to catch him in the act or after he does something bad.
*This demonstrates to the audience that the relationship between him and his son Laertes is not as loving as a Father should be.
*Polonius is expecting Laertes to disappoint him.
*The theme of watching is used as it especially relates tot he character of Polonius due to his want of knowing everything (fatal flaw) which causes his death. - 2Lines 110-111 (Relationship between Polonius and Ophelia)Polonius - "That hath made him mad.
I am sorry that with better heed and judgement I had not quoted him."
*These lines demonstrate that Polonius does actually care about his daughter and asks for her forgiveness. He now believes that what has caused Hamlet's madness is Ophelia's distancing and that he is responsible for telling Ophelia to stop talking to him.
*Hamlet's madness first m.entioned by another character (beginning of the end)
