Flashcards
ACT 3 SCENE 2
Cards in this deck (7)
- 1Lines 22-23 (Directions for the play)Hamlet - "The mirror up to nature, to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image"
*He wants the play to resemble real life as much as possible, so he can catch Claudius' reaction.
*The mirror is up to nature, as nature is a sign of peace and purity, meaning that the play is going to only resemble the truth about Old King Hamlet's death.
*Appearance vs Reality - using his madness to hide the fact that the play was intentionally acting out Claudius' and Gertrude's actions. - 2Line 96 (Relationship between Hamlet and Horatio)Hamlet - "And after we will both our judgements join"
*This demonstrates the closeness between these two characters as Horatio is the only person who knows the truth, meaning that Hamlet has complete trust in him.
*Horatio is seen as a trustworthy character by the audience as he is a scholar and he is repeatedly trusted by many characters to make the right choice (such as at the beginning of the play when the soldiers show him the ghost to get his opinion - respected).
*Both are scholars and intelligent. - 3Lines 138-139 (Mourning + confusion)Hamlet - "Let the devil wear black, for I'll have a suit of sables."
*Demonstrates that the character of Hamlet is either pretending to act mad or is actually falling under the lie, as a suit of sables is normally a black suit which people wear in mourning.
*This could insinuate that Hamlet is secretly foreshadowing to everyone what he plans to do (devil reference), as he will be sent to hell when he kills Claudius.
*The fact that he says it in the future tense "I will have" further demonstrates the actions he will take in the future (murder Claudius).
*Ironic because he believes his first murder will be Claudius, but he actually kills Polonius and Laertes before killing his father (may have been subconsciously due to feeling jealousy at the relationship between that father and son, something that was taken away from him by the now King Claudius. - 4Line 190 (Mousetrap play causing tension)Second player (as Queen) - "None wed the second but who killed the first."
*This causes tension between the characters as hamlet is insinuating through the play that Gertrude may have killed her husband.
*Hamlet makes the play personal to see how everyone reacts so that he can gauge their reaction and tell if they were part of his father's murder or not.
*This phrase is demonstrating how unnatural it is to marry someone after their husband has died - a way for Hamlet to demonstrate how wrong his mother's actions were. - 5Line 209 (Grief)First Player (as King) - "Grief joys, joy grieves"
*The audience can see Hamlet's confusion through this use of juxtaposition. (maybe starting to become mad).
*The fact that he is saying that 'Joy grieves' might be due to the fact that the good people are the ones who grieve a dead loved-one properly. He is saying that Claudius and Gertrude are both emotionless if they are able to not grieve his father after such a short time. - 6Line 240 (Similarities between both Queens)Gertrude - "The lady doth protest too much, methinks"
*This comment is ironic as the character of the Queen played by Second Player is meant to mirror Gertrude. - 7Line 403 (How Hamlet is going to treat his mother)Hamlet - "I will speak daggers to her, but use none."
*Foreshadows the events in the closet scene, where he verbally attacks his mother.
*Demonstrates to the audience that he now trusts in the ghost and is following his orders of not harming Gertrude during his revenge plan.
