Flashcards
ACT 3 SCENE 3
Cards in this deck (3)
- 1Lines 26-27 (Claudius talking about Hamlet's madness)Claudius - "For we will fetters put about this fear, which now goes too free-footed"
*Fetters - chain or a leash (He is going to treat his nephew as an animal/pet - can not be trusted and maybe dangerous (his secret)).
*Claudius is demonstrating to the audience that Hamlet and the ghost are right and he feels that he needs to start keeping close control over Hamlet (on a leash - like an animal). - 2Line 45-46 (Claudius' guilt)Claudius - "Is there not enough rain in the sweet heavens to wash it white as snow?"
*Biblical reference to the washing of sins which may be said by Claudius due to the fact that he knows that his sin is too bad to even wash away his sins and ask God for forgiveness.
*White is a symbol of peace and purity - two things that the character of Claudius is lacking. - 3Lines 97-98 (Appearance vs reality - Claudius' praying)Claudius - "(Rising) My words fly up, my thoughts remain below. Words without thoughts never to heaven go."
*Claudius notes that his prayers were useless, as he still thought about his evil deeds without repentance.
*Claudius is sure Heaven will see through his lying prayers, and realize he's not fully sorry.
*Irony - Hamlet chose not to kill him because he didn't want to send him to heaven, when Claudius' prayers were not actually sincere.
