Flashcards

ACT 3 SCENE 4

Hannah Vivancos English A level English 4 cards

Cards in this deck (4)

  1. 1Lines 11-12 (Hamlets anger towards Gertrude)Queen - "Hamlet, thou hast thy father much offended."
Hamlet - "Mother, you have my father much offended."
*The use of nearly the same sentence demonstrates to the audience the mocking, disgusted tone that Hamlet uses when correcting his mother to who his father actually is.
*Shows the lack of respect that Hamlet had towards his mother at that point in the play - sees females as less powerful and important than men (Misogynist).
*Portrays how Gertrude is moving on but Hamlet is still mourning or stuck in the past.
  2. 2Lines 93-94 (Sexual imagery)Hamlet - "Nay, but to live in the rank of sweat of an enseamèd bed, stewed in corruption."
*Demonstrates to the audience the disgust that Hamlet feels towards his mother and uncle's relationship - by using the word corruption and graphic imagery (sin or against the law).
*By insinuating that Gertrude and Claudius are now living 'in the rank of sweat on an enseamèd bed', he shows that he has no respect for them (Social hierarchy).
  3. 3Line 137 (Hamlet actually becoming mad - Ghost)Gertrude - "This is the very coinage of your brain."
*Due to the fact that Gertrude can not see the ghost, Shakespeare is presenting Hamlet as a madman, no longer merely acting the part.
*She does not see the Ghost because of her own guilt, so Gertrude's black heart impedes her vision, refusing her the sight of her loving husband - only the pure hearted or innocent can see the ghost.
*Might be another misogynistic feature in the play - women are too weak to cope with seeing a ghost (only appears to male characters).
  4. 4Line 179 (Hamlet's riddled language)Hamlet - "I must be cruel only to be kind"
    * This juxtaposition demonstrates Hamlets madness, as he may not realise that his sentences do not make sense.
*Could be foreshadowing the fact that he has to kill Claudius in order to avenge his dead father.
