Flashcards
ACT 5 SCENE 1
Cards in this deck (3)
- 1Line 1-2 (Ophelia's suicide)First Clown - "Is she to be buried in Christian burial that
wilfully seeks her own salvation?"
*The Clowns express the sentiment of the common people that Ophelia has committed suicide, although the audience has only Gertrude's poetic account of the drowning, which she says was accidental. Later in this scene we see that the Priest also doubts Ophelia's death was an accident.
*The line 'seeks her own salvation' demonstrates that maybe some men could see the undermining of women and how they were treated as less as men (felt sorry for them and understood why she took her life) or felt sorry for her as she was broken when her father died. - 2Lines 205-206 + 209 (The inevitability of death)"Alexander died, Alexander was buried, Alexander returneth into dust"
"Imperious Caesar, dead and turned to clay"
*This demonstrates that death is inevitable, and the character of Hamlet has come to realise that even the greatest and most important of men get returned to the ground (Alexander the great + Julius Caeser). - 3Lines 266-268 (Hamlet's love for Ophelia)Hamlet - "I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up my sum."
*The fact that Hamlet does not have to prove anything to any of the other character and can truly be himself and speak the truth due to his madness, demonstrates to the audience that he truly did love Ophelia.
*His thoughts may mirror that of the audience, as Laertes does not make any show of brotherly love towards Ophelia unitil after her death.
