Sociology Lecture 2 Notes

Aaron Thain Sociology English 15 cards

Cards in this deck (15)

  1. 1What is a Social System?A set of relationships between people that last over time.
  2. 2What is the difference between an open social closure and a closed social closure? An open social closure would be a society where you can move between the strata of the society (social mobility). A closed social closure would be where it is not possible to move between the strata of that society (class system).
  3. 3What is Social Stratification? The arrangement of individuals into hierarchical strata within society
  4. 4What are the 3 dimensions of Social Stratification?Race and Ethnicity, Age, Gender
  5. 5Explain the Social dimension of Race and Ethnicity.Race = Social Construct. No biological meaning, we are all the same race. 'Race Logic' is the pseudoscience and 'legitimisation' that some races are above others.
  6. 6Explain the Social dimension of Gender.Gender Inequality. This is more pseudoscience that women are somehow inferior to men, in order to preserve the patriarchy. This was changed over time with the introduction of various laws.
  7. 7Explain the Social dimension of Age.Age Discrimination; the idea that some members of society are no longer as capable because they are 'over the hill'. Now protected by law from discrimination, along with sexuality, social class and disability.
  8. 8Name the 4 Systems of Stratification.Slavery, Feudal, Caste, Social Class.
  9. 9Explain the Stratification System of Slavery.Slavery in the 15th-19th century; Colonial Empires. Started as 'indebted labour' where people cannot pay off their debts and are forced to work, but not considered 'property'. That came later. Can leave cultural legacy, such as in America.
  10. 10Explain the Stratification System of Feudalism. The relationship between a landowner and those who work the land (peasants/serfs). Legitimised by religion, where the top 10% (Clergy, Landowners, Nobility) where placed there by God in the Middle Ages. Ended during the 1700's from the French Revolution.
  11. 11Explain the Stratification System of Caste.Caste = Inherited ascribed social status. Reincarnation, legitimised by religion, that if you did good in your life you would be reincarnated higher up the ladder. Marriage was very controlled, no marrying between castes. Doesn't work well with Globalisation, slowly falls over time.
  12. 12Explain the Stratification System of Social Class.‘Non-ascribed’ (not held in a class, can move between them) disparities in income, health, education, housing, wealth, power, status and prestige.
  13. 13What are the 5 points to remember about Karl Marx?- “The (written) history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.” Marx, 1848
    - The Bourgeoisie (Capital) an the Proletariat (Labour)
    - ‘Iron Law of Wages’ – Lasalle/Ricardo
    - Class Conflict & Alienation
    - Ideology
  14. 14What are the 5 points to remember about Max Weber?- Multidimensional System, containing;
    - Social Inequality (differences in status despite money such as clergy or teachers)
    - Economic Class (reverse applies, can have a lot of money but little status)
    - Prestige
    - Power
  15. 15What are the 3 things to remember about Emile Durkheim?- Stratification is the outcome of individuals’ position within the division of labour, with position and rewards distribute accord to ability and scarcity of skills and aptitudes.
    - Normal Division of Labour vs. Forced Division of Labour. Normal would be when things are relatively fair, while Forced is when positions were given based on things like prestige or social connections over talent or hard work.
    - Anomie, when people don’t realise that other people are important, high and low, causing breakdown of trust and values in society.
