Computer Science: Unit 1: Data Representation: Part 1: Binary and Hexidecimal

HRYN red Computer Science GCSE English 25 cards

Cards in this deck (25)

  1. 11.1Binary
  2. 2What is Data?Raw facts and figures
  3. 3InformationData that has been organised and transformed to make it more useful.
  4. 4Data ProcessingTurning data into information
  5. 5What are the only things computer's understand?Power on and power off
    1 and 0
  6. 6What is 1 bit? / represented asA 1 or 0
  7. 7What is a nibble?4 bits (half a byte)
  8. 8What is the value of a byte? What is an example that 1 byte could store?8 bits
    1 character of text
  9. 9What is the value of a Kilo Byte? What could 30KB represent?1024 bytes
    A full page of text
  10. 10What is the Value of a Mega Byte? Whats an example that 3MB could store?1024 Kb
    A small digital color photograph
  11. 11What is the Value of a Gigabyte? Whats an example that 4.5GB could store?1024 MB
    A DVD
  12. 12What is the Value of a Terra byte? What could 1TB store an example?1024GB
    A Hard disk
  13. 13What can binary by used to represent in forms of data?Numbers
    Text
    Images
    Sound
    Video
  14. 14What is the definition of binary?Anything that can exist in two different states, and only 2.
Base 2, a number system with 2 digits
  15. 15What is data held as in computers?Electrical Signals
  16. 16What is RAM and what does it stand for?Random Access Memory
The main memory that holds data
  17. 17What is a Register and what is its function?Where data is stored in a small area of memory called the register when being processed (data being changed or transformed by changing the electric signals that make the data). The register only holds a few bits of data (8,16,32 bits). All calculations done by the computer are carried out in registers.
    Its small but very fast.
  18. 18What is Denary?Anything that can exist in 10 different states/base 10, a number system with 10 digits. Called base 10 or decimal
  19. 19Make sure how to convert denary and binaryJust go over
  20. 201.2Hexadecimal
  21. 21What is Hexadecimal?A number system with 16 digits. Each column value is worth 16 times more than the previous column.
  22. 22How do you convert Denary to Hexadecimal?0-255 - divide the denary number by 16. This goes in the 16's column and the remainder goes into the units column
above 255- find the biggest value you can divide by from the hexadecimal grid and put the result of the division under the number, then divide the remainder by the biggest number you can. Continue dividing till you can't divide anymore.
    Go over/practice
  23. 23How do you convert Hexadecimal to Denary? There is an exact match between the 16 hex digits and the 16 binary numbers from 0000-1111 in the conversion table
  24. 24What are the uses of Hexadecimal? 6Use instead of denary because matches binary exactly - conversion quick and easy
Use hex instead of binary cause easier to read and understand than binary - easier to wrote, less mistakes, easy to check
RAM addresses usually written in hex
Machine code - turns all software to binary - programmers turn these numbers to hex and error is shown in hex
Use for colors - 24bit color show as hex instead of binary
    MAC addresses written in hex
  25. 25What does the first 6 hex digit represent on a MAC address? What does the second 6 hex digit represent?First - device manufacture
    Second - device serial number.
