Part 1: The Origins of the Cold War Key Topic 1: The end of WW2 USA - FEATURES OF CAPITALISM ~POLITICS: -Usually multiple political parties; government chosen by the people in democratic elections. ~ECONOMY: -There were great differences in wealth, but majority have a high standard of living. ~BELIEFS: -'The American Dream' promised everyone the right to try and becoming successful and wealthy.
Part 1: The Origins of the Cold War Key Topic 1: The end of WW2 USSR - FEATURES OF COMMUNISM ~POLITICS: -The workers would control the government and businesses. -The country would be a one party government (communist party) ~ECONOMY: -Private businesses and individual enterprises would be banned and a government of workers would own everything. ~BELIEFS: -To many, particularly the poor, it represented an alternative to a system that had done nothing to help them.
Part 1: The Origins of the Cold War Key Topic 1: The end of WW2 Why was there so much mistrust between the USA and USSR before WW2 ? ~IDEOLOGICAL DIFFERENCES: -USSR=Communism -USA=Capitalism -America feared the spread of communism and thought it would destroy their way of life. ~WW1: -1917| Russia withdrew from WW1 (allies felt betrayed) ~PROPAGANDA: -Both sides spread political views about how bad the other's ideology was. ~THE RUSSIAN CIVIL WAR: -1917| Russian ruler Lenin changed Russia to a communist country. ~THE NAZI-SOVIET PACT: -Hitler and Stalin made a deal not to invade each other.
Part 1: The Origins of the Cold War Key Topic 1: The Yalta Conference AIMS OF EACH LEADER AT THE YALTA CONFERENCE IN FEBRUARY 1945 ~STALIN'S AIMS: -Wanted to continue to cooperate with the USA and Britain. -Spheres of Influence should be created to guarantee. -Wanted Germany to remain weak. ~CHURCHILL'S AIMS: - Wanted Germany to be rebuilt as a democratic country. -Look out for British interests and halt Soviet expansion. -Keep a close relationship with the USA. -Didn't want to compromise with the Soviets. ~ROOSEVELT'S AIMS: -Was wholly committed to working with the USSR to rebuild Europe. -European countries should self determinate (be able to choose their ideology). -No spheres of influence. -United Nations should lead to collective security. *The leaders disagreed on: what to do with Germany and the reparations and whether Eastern Europe should be made communist.
Part 1: The Origins of the Cold War Key Topic 1: The Potsdam Conference THE AGREEMENTS AND DISAGREEMENTS OF THE LEADERS AT THE POTSDAM CONFERENCE IN JULY 1945 ~AGREEMENTS: -Germany was to be divided as discussed in Yalta. -The Nazi Party was to be banned and it's leaders were to be tried as War Criminals. -Germans living in other countries were returned. ~DISAGREEMENTS: -Truman threatened USSR (threatened to use force if aims were not achieved). -Poland lost some territory to the USSR (against the West's wishes).
