Reception theory individualise their understanding. Meaning does not exist until created by the audience.

hegemonic theory developed from Marxist theory. common sense and 'go along with it' attitude to keep society working properly -recognise inequalities and injustices
Mulvey Male gaze / feminist / post-feminist theory (media created with white heterosexual male in mind)
