Tacitus, Book 1 Events and People

Description

These are not set details, but what I think are the most important aspects of Book 1 that are handy to know. Even matters of the influence of women or the character of the emperors are covered in these selected areas :)

Question Answer
Why was Tiberius chosen by Augustus? Tacitus, Book 1 After the death of his sister's son, A marked out Marcus Agrippa, a first-rate soldier who had previously helped him with victories, as his heir, and married him to Julia. Together they had many children, two of which A adopted, Lucius and Gaius Caesar. Yet Marcus Agrippa and his sons had died, leaving A with only his stepsons to turn to. Nero Drusus was already dead by this point, so left the only option was T. Livia is suggested by Tacitus to have exercised complete control over A, and had convinced him to exile his grandson, Agrippa Postumus.
The First Crime, Tacitus, Book 1 The Assassination of A. P: T is suggested to have said nothing to the Senate regarding his death, "pretending" it was by A's orders that he had been killed. Tacitus questions this, however, and claims either T himself ordered the assassination out of fear, or his mother did (as she apparently did with so many others e.g Lucius, Gaius, and even A???)
The Accession, Tacitus, Book 1 All the important people swear fealty to T - the consuls, Strabo, the army etc. T said that he would arrange A's last honours, but that this would be the only state business he'd assume. However, he gave the watchword to the Guard and had them escort him into the Senate House. He sent letters to the armies as if he were their emperor - hypocrisy?
Reasons For T's Reluctance to Accede, Tacitus, Book 1 Tacitus claims this was due to T's fear of G, who controlled a vast and large Roman force. He feared that G would prefer the throne to the prospect of it. Also, Tacitus suggests that T wanted to be chosen by the Senate to be emperor; so he may not be the man who was placed as Princeps because he was only option left for A or because his mother had put him there.
Honours for T and his Mother, Tacitus, Book 1 The senators wanted to name T not only "Son of Augustus" but also "Son of Julia" (Livia), who was renamed the Augusta. They also wanted to name her "Mother of the Country" but T declined this, claiming that only reasonable honours should be given to women. This clearly shows Livia's influence and popularity with the senators.
