The story of muhammad (till marriage) Muhammad was born in Mecca in 570 CE. His father and mother died when he was very young and was raised by his uncle. He used to work as a camel driver between Syria and Arabia but later secured a job managing caravans. he was employed by a wealthy Meccan widow called Khadija who he later married.
Muhammads visits from Angels. Muhammad would regularly visit a cave in Mount Hira to meditate. One day, 40-year-old Muhammad came back and told his wife that he had either gone mad or had become a prophet as he had been visited by an angel.
What was Muhammad's role as a prophet? A prophet is a messenger of God. Muhammad made sure it was clear that he could not perform any miracles and could only preach what he received as a message
What was Muhammad message to his countrymen? Muhammad's message to his countrymen was to convert from pagan polytheism, dishonesty, greediness, ask forgiveness from evil and worship Allah, the only true god.
Why was it very hard for Muhammad to get followers? for the first 3 years, Muhammad only gained 40 followers. this was because his teachings threatened the Meccan way of life, both moral and economic.
How were Muhammad's followers discriminated against? since Muhammad's teaching opposed the Meccan way of living. his followers were mocked in the beginning, however, it soon turned to open violence. They were beaten sticks, stoned, sent to prison and even refused service from merchants.
What was the situation in Yathrib? Even though the situation in Mecca was getting worse, Muhammad had gained followers in Yathrib. Yathrib was in desperate need of a strong ruler. So, it was proposed that if Muhammad would come to Yathrib, all the people over there would convert to Islam and protect him and his followers with their lives.
How did Muhammad escape from Mecca The leaders of Mecca heard of Muhammad's plan to escape and tried to stop it. However, Muhammad and his close friend Abu Bakr managed to narrowly escape and evade a search party.
What was the 'miracle' Muhammad had created? Once in Yathrib (which gained the name of Medina al-Nabi (the city of the prophet)), Muhammad proved himself as an excellent politician and statesman. He managed to turn Medina (Yathrib) from a kingdom in desperate need of a stable rule, to a prosperous kingdom. this was the miracle he had created.
Muhammad's conquest of Mecca In 630 CE, Muhammad and his troops marched to Mecca and defeated it. He witnessed the conversion of nearly the whole Meccan population. He died 2 years later, after conquering nearly the whole of Arabia for Islam.
To all Muslims in the world, the most sacred place is a black-draped, square shrine called the Kaaba. It is located Al-Haram Mosque in Mecca. It is every Muslim's ultimate goal to take a pilgrimage to Kaaba at least once.
How did Islam spread after Muhammad's death? Even after Muhammad's death, by 634 CE, islam had taken over the arabian peninsula. within a 100 years of his death, Islam had spread to the Atlantic and China. Thissuccess was due to the military and political abilities of Muhammad's successors, the Caliphs OR Khalifas.
How did the division between the Shias and Sunnis emerge? Since Muhammad did not name any successor, it created confusion as to whether Muhammad's son in law also cousin Ali (Shias) should succeed, or his good friend Abu Bakr (Sunnis).
What are the 5 pillars of Islam? When is their holy day? There holy day is on Friday. The 5 pillars of Islam are Hajj, Ramadan, Shahada, Salat and Zakat.
Explain Shahada Shahada means faith in one divine creator whom the Muslims call Allah.
Explain Salat Salat is a prayer that all Muslim people must say. The prayer is said 5 times a day. Muslims face towards Mecca, the holiest city for Islam. The prayer is said in Arabic.
Explain Zakat Zakat means both “purification” and “growth.” In practice, Zakat means that all Muslims must give 2.5% of everything they earn to people in need.
Explain Ramadan “Ramadan” translates to “the fast.” Ramadan is one month long and all Muslims do not eat from sunrise to sundown. They also believe they will gain sympathy for those humans less fortunate than themselves. Ramadan ends with a feast (Iftar) at sunset.
Explain Hajj “Hajj” means “pilgrimage.” Each year, every Muslim who is able to must go on a journey to Mecca which is in Saudi Arabia.
Why do Muslims wear plain white clothes when they go on the Hajj The pilgrims wear plain white clothes so that they all look alike. Muslims believe that in this way wealth and social class will disappear, and they will all stand as equals before God.
What is the feast held at the end of the Hajj? At the end of the Hajj, a great festival takes place. In this festival called Eid Al-Adha, pilgrims exchange gifts. Eid Al-Adha and the feast at the end of Ramadan are two main holidays of the Islamic religion.
