Ribboning "The technique of forcing the hair between the thumb and the back of the comb to create tension," (524).
Backcombing "Also known as teasing, ratting, matting, or French lacing; combing small sections of hair from the ends toward the scalp, causing shorter hair to mat at the scalp and form a cushion or base," (522).
Soft press "The technique of pressing the hair to remove 50 to 60 percent of the curl by applying the thermal pressing comb once on each side of the hair," (525).
Smooth press "The space between the teeth of the comb varies with the size and style of the comb. Closely spaced teeth provide a smooth press," (469).
Base curl The area of the curl closest to the scalp.

Liquid gels "Also known as texturizers; styling products that are lighter and less viscous than firm hold gels, are used for easy styling, defining, and molding," (524).
Spiral curls "A method of curling the hair by winding a strand around the rod. It creates a vertical corkscrew effect and works best on one length of hair to create volume," (464).
Fine hair Type of hair density.
Globally harmonized system A system used to classify & label chemicals. (See pg 71 for info)
State regulatory agencies "Licensing agencies, state boards of cosmetology, commissions, and health departments," (74).
Mildew (MIL-doo) "Is a fungus, that affects plants or grows on inanimate objects but does not cause human infections in the salon," (83).
Phenolic disinfectants (fi-NOH-lik dis-in-FEK-tents) "A powerful disinfectant, known as tuberculocidal. They are a form of formaldehyde, have a very high pH, and can damage the skin & eyes," (88).
UV sanitizers "are useful storage containers, but they do not disinfect or sterilize," (90).
Rectangular base Usually used at the side of the head. The base of the section is shaped like a rectangle.
Classic styling brushes A half-round, rubber-based brush that is heat resistant and antistatic. (see pg 457 for more info)
Inner edge (flat iron) Edge closest the stylist when holding the flat iron. (461)
125-degree Is used when completing a Full-Base thermal curl.
Binary fission The division of cells into daughter cells. (78)
Wiry/curly hair Refers to hair texture.
Light paper Used to test the heat of hot tools. A WHITE Sanek strip is a perfect example. (See pg 470)
