Question Answer
What is the greenhouse effect? Why does it occur? A natural phenomenon that keeps the earth warmer that it would be other wise. It occurs because of certain gases in the atmosphere which humans are altering each day.
How does the Greenhouse Effect work? The GHG's absorb some of the long-waved infrared that the earth emits. This warms the Greenhouse gases so they undergo their own radiation which some head back down to the earth
What are some Greenhouse gases? Water Vapour (H2O) Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Methane (CH4) Ozone (O3)
What are some characteristics of CO2? Lives for about 2 years in the atmosphere, and is absorbed by plants or dissolved in the surface of the ocean.
Why is there a seasonal cycle of CO2? Because of the Boreal Forrest. High rates of uptake by plants during growing season (spring)
What are some Characteristics of Methane? CH4 Shorter life span than CO2. 70% of methane is emissions are from human activities.
How is Methane produced? Decay of Plant material Digestive tracks of animals (cows) Garbage Decomposition Burning of Forests and grasslands
How are greenhouse gases increasing? CO2--> combustion of fossil fuels CH4--> Fossil fuel mining CCl4--> industrial N2O--> Agricultural
What are some biological Effects of Global Warming? Spring is starting 2.3 days earlier Birds are nesting earlier Trees blossoming earlier Hibernation ending earlier
What are some bad biological effects? Warmer water of oceans is killing coral and threatening sea life. West Nile virus can now survive at higher latitudes because of warmer climates.
What are some strategies for reducing the intensity of greenhouse effect? With a focus on CO2, switching to solar, geothermal ect.. There's also improved technolgical efficiency in public transit, motor vehicles and more walking is being done. Insulation also improves retention to heat in winter and cooler in summers.
What is natural Cooling? Stratospheric Aerosols that are injected into the atmosphere by erupting volcanoes. They absorb incoming solar radiation that warms up the stratosphere.
