Question Answer
What is a neurotransmitter? A neurotransmitter are chemical messengers that pass information to your brain and then to body.
What is Dopamine? This is a special neurotransmitter because it is both inhibitory (hindering or preventing an action) and excitatory (application of energy to something) Dopamine helps with depression and is also responsible for our drive of desire on motivation.
What is Serotonin? Serotonin is an inhibitory neurotransmitter which means it does not stimulate the brain. Serotonin can affect sleep, appetite, mood, memory and sexual desire.
What are Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) ? SSRIs such as Prozac are the most common antidepressants and work by blocking the transporter mechanism that reabsorbs serotonin into the presynaptic cell after it has fired, leaving more serotonin in the synapse and prolonging its activity.
What is an atypical antipsychotic drug? An atypical antipsychotic drug such as Clozaril act only temporarily by occupying domine receptors then detaching to allow normal dopamine transmission.
How do antidepressants work? Antidepressants work by reducing the rate of absorption or by blocking the enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitters. Both of these ways increase the amount of neurotransmitters available to excite neighbouring cells.
How do antianxiety drugs work? Benzodiazephines (BZs) are the most common drugs used to treat anxiety. BZs slow down the activity of the central nervous system. this is done by enhancing the activity of GABA, a biochemical substance which is the bodys natural form of anxiety relief.
What do BetaBlockers do (BBs) ? BetaBlockers are used to reduce anxiety. they reduce the activity of adrenaline and noradrenaline (a hormone) which are part of the bodys response to stress.
