Who is Prometheus? he is the son of Iapetos. He is a trickster god who is brilliant and shifty. he is a forward thinker and in some stories he created man and cares about man.
Prometheus was chain to a pillar for 500 generations with an eagle tearing out his liver and torturing him. How did the punishment start? He had tried to trick Zeus by filling a sacrificial meat with bones instead of all the good stuff. the one with the bones looked bigger and he asked Zeus to pick. Some stories say he actually tricked Zeus while others say Zeus only played along. Zeus was very angry and to punish Prometheus he took fire away from man, the people Prometheus had made.
How did Prometheus respond when Zeus took fire from man? He stole it back and hid it inside a hollow fennel root and gave it back to man?
How did Zeus react when Prometheus stole fire? He hoped to punish man more so he had the craftsman god Hephaestus form a modest girl from clay and water. Athena, Aphrodite, and Hermes also gave her gifts to make her all that a women was supposed to be according to the greeks.
Who was this girl the gods made? Describe her? She was named Pandora. She was the firts women and was said to have brought all evil into the world. She was beautiful but tricky and filled with lies and conspired for evil. Aphrodite gave her charm and sensuality. Hermes gave her cunning ways, no morals, and persuasive words. She was taught to weave and she was shallow. She wore a veil, jewellery, and a crown.
What did Zeus do with Pandora? How did Prometheus try to stop him? She was brought where men and gods were gathered and then brought to Prometheus' brother Epimethius. Epimethius is a foll and his brother warned him no to take anything Zeus gave him but Epimethius accepted Pandora anyway.
When Pandora was accepted by Epimethius what did she do? She opened up her cask, or lidded bowl, and released disease and pain into the world.
What was the moral of the story? Prometheus angered Zeus and he and all of mankind were punished for it. In other words don't mess with Zeus
Why was Pandora seen as a good and a bad thing? her name translates to all gifts. she is the mother of life even though she brought supposed evil upon mankind.
How was Prometheus freed? How did Zeus feel about this? Heracles cut his chains. Zeus had gotten over it and approved of his freedom
Why are men forced to marry? if they don't all worldly possessions go to distant relatives instead of blood relatives, which is seen as a disgrace in Greek culture
Besides the creation of women, what other to things were explained by this myth? Why ox bones are burned on alters and why men are alienated from the gods.
