Flashcards
Materials Lecture 9+2

Cards in this deck (13)
- 1What are wind turbine blades made from?Glass and carbon fibre composites
- 2How much des air transport contribute to climate change?5% of all human indued greenhouse gases and 12% of all transport sources
- 3How many premature moralities are there in the UK per year due to combustion emissions?1800 due to airports and marine ports
- 4What targets are looking to be met in the aviation?50% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per passenger kilometre compared to 2000
Substantial progress in reducing environmental impact during manufacture, maintenance of aircrafts and components. - 5What is the LCA?Life cycle assessment
- 6What is the purpose of the LCA?Assesses environmental impacts such as embodied energy and CO2 footprint associated with all the stages of a products life.
CRADLE TO GRAVE - 7Which steps is it likely to include?Raw material extraction
Material Processing
Transport
Manufacture
In service use
Maintenance
Recycling - 8Why might carbon fibre composites be preferred for turbine blades over titanium if we are considering energy?Titanium requires mine extraction, chemical treatment and melting above 1668˚C which is a very high energy demand.
If forming is required then large amounts of energy are needed to hot/cold roll forge etc... - 9Why else may carbon fibre be preferred?High specific mechanical properties such as Youngs Modulus and Yield Strength
- 10Why is lower weight turbine blades an advantage?Lighter aircraft more efficient
Allows use of lower engine casing weight reducing overall weight of engine. - 11What is a large environmental issue with carbon fibres? They are not recyclable into high performance uses
- 12What happens to the fibres after incineration?Poor fibre alignment, short aspect ratio (length to diameter ratio)

- 13What is the cycle of recycling carbon fibres?Incineration, dispersion in water, short recycled carbon fibre flow aligned, then put through a vacuum
