Flashcards

Renewable Energy

Alanna Beldom English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1Solar powerPower obtained by harnessing the energy of the sun's rays.
  2. 2Wind powerWind power is the kinetic energy of wind, harnessed and redirected to perform a task mechanically or to generate electrical power
  3. 3HydropowerThe most common type of hydroelectric power plant uses a dam on a river to store water in a reservoir. Water released from the reservoir flows through a turbine, spinning it, which in turn activates a generator to produce electricity.
  4. 4Geothermal energyThe heat from the Earth. It's clean and sustainable. Resources of geothermal energy range from the shallow ground to hot water and hot rock found a few miles beneath the Earth's surface, and down even deeper to the extremely high temperatures of molten rock called magma.
  5. 5Tidal energyTidal power or tidal energy is a form of hydropower that converts the energy obtained from tides into useful forms of power, mainly electricity. Although not yet widely used, tidal power has potential for future electricity generation. Tides are more predictable than wind energy and solar power.
  6. 6Wave energyWave power is the transport of energy by wind waves, and the capture of that energy to do useful work – for example, electricity generation, water desalination, or the pumping of water (into reservoirs). A machine able to exploit wave power is generally known as a wave energy converter (WEC).
  7. 7Biomass energyA renewable energy source from living or recently living plant and animal materials which can be used as fuel. An example of biomass is plant material that produces electricity with steam.
