6. Testing and running a solution

Cards in this deck (23)

  1. 1What is a syntax error? It is an error in the programming language. For example: missing a semi-colon, forgetting braces...
  2. 2What is a logic error? The program still runs but the program will not produce the right answer due to mistakes in the design of the program
  3. 3What is a run-time error?Error found whilst the program is running, detected when program crashes. For example: dividing by 0, infinite loop
  4. 4What is white box testing? The actual algorithm is tested line by line, all parts of the program is tested. It is done to make sure that all parts work as intended.
  5. 5What is black box testing? It is when suitable inputs are tested to see if the outputs got are the same as the expected outputs. This is done without considering how the program works. The spec is examined and the test data is chosen. Expected outputs determined, test cases made, outputs got and then compared to the expected outputs. defects fixed
  6. 6What is alpha testing? The programer plays the role of the user and tests the program in its development stage to find any bugs in the program.
  7. 7What is beta testing?Group of privileged customers test the program near the end of the development stage, trying to find any bugs the programmer might have overlooked.
  8. 8What is acceptance testing? This is when the program is given to the user so that the programer can prove to thee user that the program fits the specification it is supposed to. It is done at the end of the development cycle. The programmer will get paid after this if it satisfies the user
  9. 9What are the advantages of white box testing?1) Easier to find the which type of data to use to test the program effectively
    2) It is done by a programmer so knows what exactly the program does.
    3) Helps optimise the code
  10. 10What are the advantages of black box testing?1) less bias- new eyes
    2) Do not need to know about the code
    3) Test case can be designed as soon as the specification is produced
  11. 11What are the advantages of alpha testing?1) uses both white box and black box testing
    2) problems sorted out immediately
  12. 12What are the advantages of beta testing1) checks reliability, security and robustness
    2) Less bias- checked by users
    3) Can be done anywhere
  13. 13What are the disadvantages of white box testing?1) Uses specific knowledge of programming code
    2) Only accurate if the programmer knows what the program is supposed to do
    3) Does not account for omission errors
  14. 14What are the disadvantages of black box testing?1) The way program works not considered
    2) Can't test all inputs- time consuming
    3) Still have to white box testing
    4) test cases hard to make
  15. 15What are the disadvantages of Alpha testing?1) Reliability, robustness or security not checked
    2) Needs lab or testing environment
  16. 16What are the disadvantages of beta testing?1) Only uses black box testing
    2) Issues only implemented in future
  17. 17What are the three types of test data?1) Typical- data completely within the boundaries (checks if accepted)
    2) Invalid- data that is not in the acceptable range (checks if rejected)
    3) Borderline- data on the borders of the range (makes sure boundaries recognised)
  18. 18How to do a dry run when using a trace tablesHow to do a dry run when using a trace tables
  19. 19Describe the use of translator diagnostics as a debugging toolPoints out syntax errors by placing a red line underneath the error (visual basic) and an error message. It helps you work out what is wrong.
  20. 20Describe the use of break points as a debugging toolTells the computer to pause at the line it has been placed at, then the programmer can go through the program line by line looking at how the variables change each time. Checks logical and run time error.
  21. 21Describe the use of stepping as a debugging toolWhen the program is executed line by line to look for logical and runtime errors. Can do it at own speed, allowing you to check each variable
  22. 22Describe the use of variable checks (trace tables) as a debugging toolLets you check all the variables and see their values so you can find any patterns in the errors. Used for logical and runtime errors.
  23. 23Describe the process of an installation routine1) Copy program from CD to computer
    2) Copy required data from CD to computer
    3) Copy library requirements from CD
    4) Checks for any dependencies
    5) Checks compatibility
    6) Runs user configuration and then saves it
    7) Enable computer to be uninstalled
    8) Adds an icon
