what are the three stages of the celebrity attitude scale? Entertainment social level - sees the celebrity as providing entertainment intense personal level - the person develops intense feelings bordering on obsessive borderline-pathology level - person develops uncontrollable thoughts and fantasies. they believe they are in a relationship
Whats the absorption addiction model those who have a weak sense of personal identitity or poor psychological adjustment develop abnormal relationships with celebrities. most people will have a degree of admiration. people with poor mental health go further hoping to absorb their success. in some cases people become addicted to the celebrit.
McCutcheon study used CAS to survey 600 people. only 20% fell into the first category. 10% into the second and !% into the first (delusional) the first two categories
evaluation (study) Maltby et al - Eysneck personality questionnaire to assess the relationships between parasocial relationships and personality. entertainment social level associated with extraversion. Intense personal level associated with neuroticism (self report)
Evaluation not all people with poor mental health develop parasocial relationships, suggests there are individual differences.
Evaluation Greater understanding of celebrity worship- stalking development of therapies including psychotherapy with a role for drug therapy to reduce the obsessive tendencies
