Participation observation
Cards in this deck (6)
- 1Non-participant observationThe researcher simply observes the group or event without taking part in it.
Example: Two way mirrors to observe children playing - 2Participant observationThe researcher observes the group, event or everyday life whilst taking part in it.
- 3Overt observationThe researcher makes their true identity and purpose known to those who are being studied; the sociologist is open about what they're doing
- 4Covert observationThe study being carried out is 'under cover'. The researcher's real identity and purpose is kept from the group being studied. The researcher takes on a fake identity and role, often posing as a genuine member of the group.
