    1. Opened up working opportunities for women (3m)
      1. A series of protests in 2010 meant an increase in minimum wages.
        1. Support also from garment workers in Mexico!
          1. Helped by support from foreign-based NGO's (Action Aid).
            1. 'Western companies can afford to pay the higher wages'.
        2. Established in the 70's.
          1. By 2009, garment exports=80% of all exports, mainly to Europe & USA.
            1. For retailers such as Zara, Wal-mart, H&M. M&S.
          2. Global buyers place orders to firms - who then can outsource work to complete these orders.
            1. These international buyers govern parts of the value chain.
              1. Setting specific product requirements.
                1. Following international labour regulations.
                  1. Ban on child labour.
                    1. The Bangladesh Garment Exports Manufactures Association, UNICEF, the ILO (International Labour Org) collaborate to ensure ban on child labour.
                    2. Enforcing good working conditions.
                      1. From 2010, factories not adhering to standards were not being used again.
                        1. Checks being made by independent auditors.
                        2. Lots of NGO's & retailers coming together to help improve these.
