About Globalisation and Global Systems
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
The page is built around globalisation and the organisations and places that shape it. Many resources are mind maps, and several define the term in simple language: globalisation means the greater integration of the global economy, with jobs and wealth in one country increasingly dependent on trade and investment from others.
- Transnational corporations: the TNC mind maps on Nokia, Apple and Tesco, plus flashcards on Walmart and Coca-Cola.
- Power and politics: the Superpowers mind map, the Rising powers mind map and notes on colonialism and neocolonialism.
- People and identity: the Migration, identity and Sovereignty mind map and notes on Eastern European migration.
- Trade and food: the Banana Trade slide set, the Food Aid mind map and a quiz about cocoa.
Where to start
Begin with the Globalisation mind map, then read the notes titled Globalisation - created from Mind Map. They give you the core definition and ideas in a short space. Next, try the Globalisation quiz, which asks what a shrinking world means and whether homogenisation makes places the same.
Moving on to case studies
Case studies matter in Geography, so spend time on them. The notes on easyJet describe how an airline founded in 1995 grew from UK-only flights into a network linking many European cities. The Globalisation Case Studies mind map looks at media mergers such as News Corporation. The Nokia TNC Case Study mind map shows where a firm puts its headquarters, research and production.
Several flashcard decks follow the Edexcel Going Global unit, such as the one titled UNIT 1 - EDEXCEL GEOGRAPHY (Going Global). These suit quick recall of key words and studies.
Using quizzes and maps together
- Read a mind map and cover up its branches, then try to rebuild it from memory.
- Take a quiz on the same topic, such as the Wal-Mart TNC Case Study quiz.
- Return to any branch you missed and test yourself with flashcards.
Where it fits
This unit sits in the Economic, Political and Global Geography strand of Geography. Teachers can pull in maps and notes for lessons, while students can pick a case study and make their own set to extend what is here.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the Globalisation mind map, which sets out what globalisation is and why it matters. Then take the Globalisation quiz to check you understand ideas such as a shrinking world and homogenisation. After that, move on to the case studies, beginning with a company you already know, such as Tesco.
What do the TNC resources cover?
They look at transnational corporations through real companies. You will find mind maps on Nokia, Apple and Tesco, flashcards on Walmart and Coca-Cola, and a Wal-Mart quiz. They cover where firms base their headquarters and research, and the costs and benefits for source and host countries.
Are these resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. If you create a free account, your quiz scores are saved and you can build your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Which exams do the resources suit?
Most are aimed at secondary level. The listed resources mention GCSE Geography, A-level Geography, IB Geography, Edexcel AS Geography and Edexcel A2 Geography. Several flashcard decks and notes follow the Edexcel Going Global unit, so check your own specification before choosing what to revise.
Is there anything on migration or power?
Yes. The Migration, identity and Sovereignty mind map asks how globalisation affects international migration and how nation states have evolved. The Superpowers mind map asks what makes a country a superpower. There are also notes on colonialism, economic neocolonialism and Eastern European migration.
What if I can't find the topic I need?
Try a nearby title first, since many mind maps and decks overlap, such as Global Groupings or Development and Globalisation. If the topic is still missing, you can make your own mind map, flashcards or notes and use them alongside the resources already here.
