Unit 1.5 V2 Network Topologies

  1. Network Types

    • Mesh Network
      • Some or all workstations are connected to each other
      • Most are usually connected to the node they exchange the most data with
    • Star Network
      • Each device is connected by an individual cable directly to the server
      • These tend to be more reliable and so are used in schools and offices
  2. Encryption

    • A method of scrambling data with a key code which makes no sense
    • In order to read it you must have the key
    • We use it with wifi so if data is intercepted it has no meaning
    • Request HTTPS, Certificate is sent, Client creates session key, Session Key sent to server, Session Key decrypted by Private Key, Session encrypted with Session Key.
  3. Wifi

    • Wireless Frequency
    • Radio Waves transmit data packets without wires
    • It has a cheap set up
    • It can lose signal through obstructions
    • Can connect multiple devices easily but more slowly
    • Can be hacked more easily
    • The user isn't tied to a specific location
  4. Ethernet

    • Stable Connection
    • Less likely to be hacked
    • Faster traffic speed
    • Generally gives out a good quality signal
  5. Protocols

    • IP = Internet Protocol, Normally referred to in IP addresses
    • HTTP = Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
    • HTTPS = Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure, encrypted sites
    • FTP = File Transfer Protocol
    • TCP = Transmission Control Protocol, uses a set of rules to exchange messages with other internet points at the information packet level.
    • IMAP = Used to retrieve emails
    • SMTP = Used to send emails
    • POP = Post Office Protocol
    • POP3 = POP version 3, used to retrieve emails
  6. Layers

    • Layers are used so troubleshooting is easier as we can locate the issue
    • If we need to edit the protocol, we can edit the one specific layer instead of the protocol as a whole.
    • Any device from any platform can use the same communication.
