communication defined: chapter one

  1. Communication is the process of creating meaning through symbolic interaction

  2. Modeling Communication

    • a linear communication model is like giving an injection. A sender encodes ideas and feelings into a message and then sends them to a receiver, who decodes the message.
      • Communication Channel: the way in which the message is being conveyed to people.
        • Mediated Communication: texting, e-mailing, faxing, etc.
          • my main communication would most likely be through social media, because my best friends live across the world in Australia, so we are constantly texting and FaceTiming.
      • Noise: the term scienteists use to describe any forces that may interfere with effective communication.
        • There are three types of noise: external, physiological, and psychological.
          • In the mornings, if someone may try and talk to me, the fact that I'm tired and can't comprheend a lot is an example of physiological noise.
      • Because of the simplicity of the liner communication model, it doesn't accurately represent all communication.
    • A Transactional Model shows that both sending and receiving messages are stimulating.
  3. Types of Communication

    • Intrapersonal communication means communicating with yourself.
      • I always catch myself practicing "possible" conversations I could potentially have in my head.
    • Dyadic/Interpersonal Communication is talking to another person.
    • Small Group Communication is exactly what it sounds like, a small group of people who are communication with one another.
    • Organizational Communication is when a group of people work together to achieve goals.
  4. Communication in a Changing World

    • Technology has dramatically changed the way everybody communicates.
      • Studies show that most people use social media and technology to stay in touch with their friends and family.
  5. Communication Competence

    • Effective communicators have the ability to choose the most appropriate behavior, have skills at performing behaviors, can look at things from different perspectives, have cognitive complexity, and can self monitor.
  6. Misconceptions

    • Communication isn't the answer to all the world's problems, and communication isn't the easiest thing to understand because of it's many different forms.
