Tissues

  • A group of cells performing similar functions. Study of tissues - Histology. Vary in structure, function and the content of their extracellular matrix.
  1. 4. Connective

    • Proper
      • Loose
      • Dense
    • Supporting
    • Fluid
  2. 3. Nervous

    • Neuroglia
      • - Support the Neurons. - Communication and control of body function.  - Half of the volume of the CNS. - Smaller, 50 times more numerous. - Help protect and nourish neurons. - Can devide. - Not excitable.
      • PNS
        • Schwann
        • Satellite
      • CNS
        • Astrocytes
        • Oligodendrocytes
        • Microglia
        • Ependymal
    • Neuron
  3. 2. Muscle

    • - Comprised of cells called fibers. - Fibers shorten and contract when stimulated by nervous system = movement.   - Myofilaments (Actin and Myosin) are responsible for muscle contractibility.   *Myo = Muscle
    • Skeletal
      • - Attached to bones of skeleton and some skin cells. - Cylindrical and long (some as long as whole muscle). - Multinucleated. - Striated and voluntary.
    • Cardiac
      • - Found only in the wall of the heart. - Cells are branched, Y-shaped, shorter than skeletal fiber cells.  - Striated and involuntary. - Attached by strong gap junction - intercalated discs (allow rapid passage of electrical current from one cell to the next during each heart beat).
    • Smooth
  4. 1. Epithelial

    •    - Lines every body surface, every cavity and every luman including organs – inside and out. - Majority of glands derived from epithelial tissue.  - Little to no extracellular matrix. - Avascular. - Functions:   Physical protection,             Selective permeability,         Secretions (Glands),  Sensation.
    • Type
      • Simple
        • Single layer. All cells have an apical layer and attached to basement membrane.
      • Stratified
        • Two or more layers. Not all layers have an apical surface, nor do all cells attach to the basement membrane.
      • Pseudostratified
        • Single layer but not all cells reach the apical surface. Their nuclei give the appearance of multilayered, stratified epithelium - but they are NOT.
    • Morphology
      • Squamous
      • Cuboidal
      • Columnar
