Love in Othello
Othello and Desdemona
- These two characters have the ideal relationship. both parties are seemingly in love and pay attention and resect to the others' intelligence and thoughts. However, as the play goes on, this respect is changed to jealousy on Othello's part, inferring perhaps that the perfect relationship does not exist.
- Othello. 'my fair warrior', 'my soul's joy', 'O my sweet', 'I do love the gentle Desdemona', 'my life upon faith!', 'I kiss'd thee ere I kill'd thee: no way but this; Killing myself, to die upon a kiss'
- Desdemona. 'I love him', 'my good lord'
Othello and Iago
- Another platonic love, but also one sided, as Othello thinks Iago is his friend, while Iago is simply using Othello to get his own means.
- O. 'honest Iago'
- Iago. 'I hate the moor'
Desdemona and Emilia
- This is a respectful sort of love. Emilia, at the end of the play seems to admire and esteem Desdemona. Emilia loves Desdemona as a freind, and Desdemona seems most relaxed when in the presence of Emilia, for example in Act 4 Scene 2, while Desdemona is singing in the bat and talking with Emilia.
Emilia and Iago
- While this love is matrimonial, there seems little affection between either player, except that Emilia wants to please Iago, as she steals the handkerchief. That is not to say there is a complete absence of love.
- Iago-
- Emillia-'I nothing but to please his fantasy'
Desdemona and Brabantio
- Brabantio is Desdemona's father. therefore, the affection felt between parties is purely the love of family connection, even though this turns one sided when Desdomona married Othello and Brabantio disowns her
- brabantio 'gentle mistress', 'for your sake, jewel'.
- desdemona 'my noble father'
Cassio and Bianca
- This is a romantic relationship. Mostly, their relationship is lob-sided, with more love emanating from Bianca and a sort of tolerance for the hope of physical gain by Cassio.
- C, 'she haunts me in every place', 'how now, my sweet Bianca'
Cassio and Desdemoona
- D. 'valiant Cassio'
- c. 'the divine Desdemona'
- Desdemona has a platonic relationship for Cassio. Likewise, Cassio is very respectful of his friendship with Desdemona.
Desdemona and Roderigo
- Unrequited love! Roderigo loves Desdeomona, however Desdemona does not ever confer with Roderigo and it is likely that she does not know of his affection for her, or of his existence.
