The Heros Journey
  1. The Call
    1. Pattern of all human experience and is expressed in all literature and film
      1. Similar to the Rite of Passage, the Heros Journey involves a Separation, Transformation and Return
        1. Usually the Heros Journey follows a standard sequence.
          1. Realization of imbalance, call to adventure. May accept of deny.
            1. Rejecting the call will not make it go away.
              1. The Threshold
                1. Jumping off point, known to unknown
                  1. Threshold Guardians - try to keep initiate from the adventure - to pass the guardian is to make a comitment
                    1. Helpers - provide assistance in direction - the Mentor is the most important helper. Helpers may appear through the journey.
                      1. The mentor keeps the initiate focused and gives stability
                        1. Challenges and Temptations
                          1. Physical or mental unknown, deeper the unknown the more danger the initiate faces
                            1. Challenges grow in difficulty, forcing change and growth
                              1. Strikes the initiates greatest weakness or fear, this must be faced before the journey ends
                                1. Abyss
                                  1. The greatest challenge, the initiate overcomes their greatest fear alone.
                                    1. "Slay the Dragon" Often takes the shape of something dreaded that needs resolving
                                      1. Transformation
                                        1. Change in behaviour since the beginning
                                          1. FINAL STEP OF DEATH AND REBIRTH: Fear must die for courage, ignorance must die for enlightenment and dependancy must die for inependance
                                            1. Similar to the Rite of Passage
                                              1. Revelation
                                                1. A sudden and dramatic change in the way of thinking
                                                  1. Often during abyss but may lead to the abyss
                                                    1. The Atonment
                                                      1. The initiate is at one with their new self, in harmony with the world and their life
                                                        1. Imbalance is corrected until next call
                                                          1. Receives of becomes aware of new gift
                                                            1. Return
                                                              1. The initiates return to everyday life, now contributes to the society
                                                                1. May return and be rejected. Runs the risk of loosing their new understanding. May start to feel disillusioned and leave the society.

                                                                    1. A result of ancient mythology and is still with us today.
