Spearman's Rho

  1. When to use Spearman's Rank

    • The Hypothesis predicts a correlation
    • The two sets of data are scores from one person/thing
    • The data are ordinal or interval
  2. How to use Spearman's Rank

    • Step 1. State the alternative and null hypothesis
    • Step 2. Record the data, rank each co-variable, and calculate the difference
      • Rank A and B seperatly from low to high (lowest number receives rank 1)
      • If there are two or more of the same number, calculate the rank by working out the mean of ranks that would have been given
    • Step 3. Find the observed value
    • Step 4. Find the critical value
      • number of participants (N)
      • one tailed or two tailed
      • look up critical value in table of critical values
    • Step 5. State the conclusion
      • e.g is the observed value greater than the critical value or visa versa
  3. if there is an R then the observed value should be greater than the critical value
