originally called demetia praecox (premature mental deterioration)
not related to dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality disorder)
1. schizo is split between emotional and intellectual aspects of experience
diagnosing is difficult no lab tests - based on behavioural observation
DSM-IV to be diagnosed - deterioration least 6 months and 2 of:
1. delusions
  1. unjustifiable beliefs
  2. positive
2. hallucinations
  1. false sensory experiences like hearing voices
  2. positive
3. disorganised speech
  1. positive
    1. behaviours are present that should be absent
4. grossly disorganised behaviour
  1. positive
5. weak or absent signs of emotion, speech and socialisation
  1. negative
    1. behaviours are absent that should be present
6. all judgement calls
cognitive symptoms
1. limitations of thought and reasoning
  1. difficulty understanding and using abstract concepts related to attention and working memory

4. diet high in sugar and saturated fat affravates schizophrenia but fish alleviates it
  1. omega 3 fatty acids increase production of BDNF increasing production of new cells in hippo and block apoptosis and other neural damage
