Databases
Key terms
- Table
- A database term. A table contains a set of records. Tables can be permanent or they can be created by a query for temporary use. You set up relationships between tables in order to create a relational database.
- Primary key
- A Key Field or Primary Key is a field within a database which enables every record to be uniquely identified. For example, at school you probably have a student or office number. This uniquely identifies you from every other student in the school. If you have a bank or savings account, you will have a bank account number which is unique and different from every other bank account number. This ensures that your money won't get muddled up with anyone elses and that you can easily keep track of deposits and withdrawals of cash.
- Field
- A field is a single piece of data about one person or one thing. Many fields make up a record. A field is usually a single column within a multi-column table.
- record
- A database term. A record is all of the data about one person or one thing. A record is made up of one or more 'fields'. For example a name and address database could have one record such as this: "Joe Blogs", "34 Wyvern Road" , "Manchester", "UK", "MN253PE" This is a complete record, with each field separated by a comma.
