Engineering Unit 1

  1. Engineering Sectors: Defined by the final product

    • Aerospace
      • Planes, helicopters, rockets
    • Automotive
      • Cars, Motorbikes, Lorrys
    • Communications
      • Phones, satellites and PCs
    • Electrical
      • Televisions, Calculators and Microwaves
    • Mechanical
      • Engines, robots
    • Biomedical
      • MRI Scanners, Artificial limbs
    • Chemical
      • Petroleum, Medicines and cleaning fluids
  2. Machining Processes

    • Turning: Uses a lathe to produce a cylindrical shape. The work piece is rotated wile being machined with a cutting tool.
    • Milling: Rotating cutter that produces simple and complex shapes. The workpiece is fixed in place and fed under the cutter.
    • Drilling: Creates circular holes in the workpiece using a drill bit. To achieve a higher quality, the drill bit must be sharp. The higher-quality drill bits are expensive.
    • Safety
      • Accidents caused by: Loose clothes snagging, flying material in eye, hand contact with revolving parts and minor burns from hot surfaces.
      • Preventing Accidents: Follow safety procedures, wear protective clothing & equipment and ensure guards are in position before operating the machinery.
  3. Forming Processes

    • Casting: Liquid metal is poured or injected into a mould. Once cooled, the shaped metal is removed from the mould. Thee is very little waste and detailed shapes can be produced.
      • Sand Casting: Used for larger parts with less accuracy. E.g. Manhole covers
      • Semi-permanent and Permanent mould casting: Used to produce products or components that are used or involve water pressure. E.g. Pressure Valves.
