C4- Chemical Patterns
Atoms
- The nucleus
- It's in the middle of the atom
- It contains protons and neutrons
- It has a positive charge because of the protons
- Almost the whole mass of the atom is in the nucleus
- Its tiny compared to the rest of the atom
- Electrons
- Move around the nucleus
- negatively charged
- tiny, but covers a lot of space
- Arranged in shells
- Number of Protons = Number of Electrons
- The nucleus
Line Spectrums
- Some elements emit colours when heated
- Lithium
- Sodium
- Potassium
- Each element give a characteristic line spectrum
- 1. When heated electrons release energy as light
- 2. Wave lengths emitted can be recorded as a line spectrum
- 3. Different elements emit different line spectrums
- 4. The practice technique to identify line spectrums is called spectroscopy.
- Can be used to identify new elements
- Some elements emit colours when heated
History of The Periodic Table
- Döbereiner
- 1800s
- Put them into groups of three called triads. Based on chemical properties
- Döbereiner
