    1. Murdock - Universal functions of the family
      1. Studied 250 societies identified 4 functions of the family
        1. Sexual - limiting sexuality to monogamous relationships preventing conflct from sexual desire
          1. Reproductive - Ensure reproduction of a new generation vital for society
            1. Economic - Acts as economic unit, ensuring survival of members by providing food & shelter
              1. Educational - Provides a stable environment in which children can be socialised into the culture of society
            2. Parsons - basic functions of the family
              1. Primary Socialisation
                1. Stabilisation of adult personalities
                  1. Changing family structure
                    1. Family changes to fit the needs of different types of society
                      1. Industry required geographically mobile workforce, difficult to achieve with extended family
                        1. Socially mobile workforce necessary
                          1. extended family status largely ascribed
                        2. Changing functions of the family
                          1. As society changes family loses some of its functions
                            1. Pre industrial carried out many functions in industrial society specialist institutions take over some of these functions this is called structural differentiation
                              1. An example of this is family healthcare and support which has been took over by the welfare state

                              1. Power of bourgeoise stems fro means of production
                                1. Land, Capital, Machinery and labour power
                                2. Capitalism - Ruling class (Bourgeoise) and Working Class employees (Proletariat)
                                  1. Because they control economic base they were able to control non economic institutions of society (media, government, religion and family)
                                    1. Explains why Marxists see family as shaped in ruling class interests
                                    2. Societal studies
                                      1. Engels - family developed so that men could be certain of childrens paternity and controlling womens sexuality ensuring them property inherited to offspring
                                        1. Zaretsky - Family is a prop to the capitalist system
                                          1. Unpaid domestic labour of housewives reproduces workers at no cost to employers
                                            1. The Family consumes commodities produced by capitalist companies
                                              1. Provides comfort to alienated workers to carry on working
                                          2. Feminist perspective
                                            1. The family is a patriarchal institution maintaining male power and dominance
                                              1. Radical Feminists - Patriarchal nuclear family dominates
                                                1. Fail to acknowledge improvements
                                                2. Postmodern feminists - more aware of increasing diversity
