photosynthesising plants are the base of all food chains
in eukaryotic plants it occurs in the stem and leaf in organelles called chloroplasts
The light INDEPENDENT reaction
formula for photosynthesis
The light DEPENDENT reaction
chloroplasts capture light and convert it into chemical energy in the form of sugar and other organic molecules
does not require light
stage occurs in storm inside chloroplasts
ATP is used to combine carbon and oxygen (from carbon dioxide) with hydrogen (from water) to produce a 3C organic molecule called triose phosphate. This involves a cycle (complex series) of reactions called the Calvin (Benson) Cycle.
Triose phosphate molecules are then combined together to form glucose. Glucose molecules are then combined together to form starch (for storage).
enzyme RUBISCO is used in this process
carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O6 + 6O2
requires presence of light
stage occurs in grand (in thylakoid discs) inside chloroplasts
pigments absorb energy which they use to:
spilt water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen
produce some ATP molecules
