Trephining was used in prehistoric times. It was mainly used when people complained of headaches, however it was also considered a cure for conditions like epilepsy. The process involved cutting out a piece of a persons skull, and filling the hole with herbs and medicinal plants. Headaches were thought to be caused by evil spirits in the head, so by cutting a hole in the skull, they were letting the spirits out. We know that some people survived this as we can see where the bone grew back in places.
