More attractions/things to do

Jobs - fishing/leisure

Climate

Aesthetically pleasing

Coastal Growth - Bournemouth:

Bournemouth is located in the South of the UK in Dorset. It is on the East Dorset coast, west of the Isle of Wight and east of Poole Harbour

Reasons for population growth:

Inward mirgration - mostly 50+ year olds move there for climate, high environmental quality and accessibility

Retirement boom

Increasing levels of employment

Growth of UK Seaside Resorts:

Late 20th century:

Railway was upgraded - Bournemouth is less than a 2 hour journey from London

Attract new employment - economic boost

Airport linked Channel Islands and Europe

Recently:

Growth in banking, finance and tourist industries

Council giving planning permission for land to be built on

University provides skilled graduates - this affects companies

Wages are lower than in southeast England

Lower house prices

Attracts elderly - day centers, clubs, social activities

Attracts young people - vibrant night life

Up until the 1960s Bournemouth followed the idealised model of development with zones of victorian hotels. After the 1960s a direct trainline was built and an airport. A university was also built. This has increased footloose industries and the focal point is no longer the pier.
