Multi-store model-the model of memory which proposes that information is passed to a STM store where it is healed for a brief duration unless rehearsed. Rehearsal leads to transfer to the LTM store. Atkinson and Shiffrin suggested that memory store, the STM and the LTM. Each store has a specific function. In the multi store model information is rehearsed in the STM and if its rehearsed enough, its transferred to the LTM. These are the stages:
Sensory info is perceived.
The sensory info is transferred to the STM, where it is maintained be rehearsal. If not rehearsed, it will be replaced with new info.
The information is transferred to the LTM .
Sensory memory (Attention) Short term memory (Rehearsal) Long term memory (transfer, retrieval)
A strength of this is multi-store model is that it is simple and can be tested.
In support of the multi store models Glanzer and Cunitz found primacy are recency effects when people were asked to memorise lists of words. (memorising the beginning and the end)
A weakness is that artificial experiments do not replicate the context that is created in real life,. Also, the model suggests that memory is a passive process whereas the reconstructive models suggest that it's an active process.
