- 1Primary Criticism of Piaget's WorkPiaget underestimated children's abilities at various stages. Children can do more earlier than what Piaget thought
- 2It is thought that babies can understand:Space and objects, the effect of occlusion, have an understanding of support, object permanence, number and mathematical reasoning, social cognition
- 3The visual cliffRelates to the understanding of space and objects. Around crawling age children are able to perceive depth, and up until that point children will still behave slightly differently in the face of depth.
- 4The Effect of OcclusionRelated to Habituation - Infants prefer to pay attention to something that is new or novel, and overtime they become accustomed to the stimuli, and pay it less attention. If there are multiple new things, children tend to look at the thing that is the most strange. THIS CAN BE USED TO FIND OUT IF A STIMULI IS NEW TO AN INFANT. At 4 months will start this.
- 5Understanding of SupportDevelops gradually by 6 months.
- 6Object PermanenceThe 'A not B' error may be related more to the difficulty in overriding a motor habit that is formed, and the coordination between the brain and the hand.
- 7Number and Mathematical ReasoningPiaget claimed that infants had no concept of number until the age of 6, but even 6 month olds show an understanding of number where they preferentially look at 3 objects rather than 2, or be more interested in sounds of 3 objects over 2.
- 8Social CognitionThe intellectual understanding of other people. New born babies would prefer to look at faces rather than scrambled faces - already understand at birth this is what humans are like.
- 9Social Cognition at 3 weeksInfants attempt to imitate other people's facial expressions.
- 10Social Cognition at 9 months oldWhen a baby has eye contact with someone, and the person eye contact drifts, the babies eye contact will drift in the same direction. Therefore have an understanding that what you're looking at may be important.
- 11IntentionsInfants will appear to understand actions in terms of intended goals.
- 12Piaget thought that cognitive development was an all or nothing phenomenon, why has this been debunked?Numerical skills and Social cognition in preschoolers, Children expressing theory of mind skills, children understanding likes and dislikes, and having an understanding of true and false beliefs
- 13Numerical Skills in preschoolersToddlers show an ability to assign numerical value to things even if it is not always correct.
- 14Children have an understanding of other people's perspectives whenThe content is more relevant to them - if instead of a series of mountains the content is sesame street dioramas
