Flashcards
long term memory
Flashcards do conjunto (19)
- 1What kind of information does the episodic memory hold?Events from our personal lives- very much like a diary
- 2What do episodic memories contain?Where it happened and who was there e.g. birthday party
- 3What may episodic memories contain?Emotions associated with the event
- 4True or false- episodic memories are declarativetrue
- 5What does 'declarative' mean?We have to make a conscious effort to recall the memories
- 6What kind of memories are semantic memories?Very much like an encyclopedia- our knowledge of the world and facts that are shared by everyone rather than personal information.
- 7What kind of memories do semantic memories start as?Episodic
- 8What makes semantic memories turn from their original memory type to the semantic type? The memory loses its association with the personal experience
- 9true or false- semantic memories are non declarativeFalse- they are declarative
- 10What kind of memories are procedural memories?Concerned with skills (how to do things)
- 11How much effort does it take to recall procedural memories?Very little- we recall them automatically
- 12How are procedural memories acquired?through practice and repetition
- 13Do procedural memories provide conscious thought?no
- 14Because procedural memories don't require conscious thought, what can we therefore do?Perform other cognitive tasks at the same time
- 15True or false- procedural memories are declarativeFalse- they are non declarative
- 16What is a strength of the theory that the different kinds of long term memory are unitary? There is supporting evidence from case studies. Episodic memory is associated with the temporal lobe and the hippocampus, semantic memory is associated with the temporal lobe and the procedural memory is associated with the cerebellum, basal ganglia and limbic system. This increases the validity of the theory that there are different, independent long term memories- there are physical neural differences between them.
- 17What is a strength of the different types of long term memory? There is supporting case study evidence. Clive Wearing, who suffered from both anterograde and retrograde amnesia, could remember how to play piano and conduct orchestra but can't remember his children's names or anything about his life after 1985. This shows that Clive's episodic memory was damaged, but his procedural memory was unaffected. This means that the type of damage to one type of LTM can leave another type unaffected, showing there are different types of LTM.
- 18What is a weakness of the case studies? They lack some core features of a science. Research into amnesiacs lacks reproducability as amnesia is rare and individual. Therefore, the cases are unlikely to represent the memory functions of the target population. This means we cannot realistically state that LTM is made up of different components.
- 19What is another strength of understanding different types of LTM?Understanding different types of long term memory allows for developments of real life practical applications. Belleville et al (2006) compared the performance of older people suffering from mild cognitive impairments who recieved memory training with that of a control group who did not. It was found that participants in the experimental group performed better on a test of episodic memory. This suggests that being able to identify different types of LTM can provide psychologists with the opportunity to improve people's lives with appropriate treatments
