The Multi-Store Model
Flashcards do conjunto (5)
- 1The Multi-Store Model- Devised by Atkinson and Shriffin (1968)
- Constituted by sensory register, short-term memory and long-term memory;
- Each store has different coding, capacity and duration; - 2The Sensory Register- Coding is different for each sense and kept in different stores (echoic, ionic, olfactory, gustatory and haptic (tactile info));
- Capacity is large (Sperling in 1960 used a 3x4 grid of letter and differet pitch sounds to show that all letters were recalled);
- Duration varies (500 milliseconds for ionic, 2 seconds for echoic);
- Info that is paid attention to passes to the STM while the rest fades through decay. - 3Short-term memory (STM)- Coding is mainly acoustic but can also be visual or semantic;
- Capacity is 5-9~ but can be increased through chunking (Jacobs in 1887 used digit span method);
- Duration is about 30 seconds but if rehearsed the information can go to the LTM. - 4Long-term Memory (LTM)- Coding is mainly semantic but can also be acoustic and visual;
- Capacity is unlimited, info can be lost due to interference or decay but not because of limited capacity;
- Duration can be a lifetime, especially if the information in well encoded or based on skills rather than facts;
- Memories don't have to be continually rehearsed to be retained. - 5Evaluation- The Multi-Store model was the original one and formed the basis for the woring memory model;
- It shows a separation between sensory register, STM and LTM;
- It is over-simplified;
- It focuses on the structure and not on the process.
