- 1Scoville & Miler (1957)- case study of HM Damage to the hippocampus & amnesiaPartial anterograde amnesia, he could not transfer new semantic & episodic memories (explicit memories) to LTM
He could carry in normal conversations: working memory, but would immediatelty forger what it was about.
memory systems highly complex, specialized & networked
hippocampus is key in transfer of STM to LTM
he retained some meories, so thergore the medial temporal region with the hippocampus is not the site of permanent storge. Plays a role in organizing & then storing them elsewhere
mediaö temporal region with the hippocampus (the parts he lost) are crucial to forming, organizig, consolidating & retrevung memory
HM case shows that the brain has multiple memoery systems
cortical areas are important for long term storae of knowledge & how to use this knowlegde in everyday situations - 2Corkin 1997 Damage to the hippocampus & amnesiaMRI scans
parts of temporal lobe & hippocampus were missing on both sides
these areas are key to neural networks & neurotransmitter pathways (Ach) - 3Sapolsky 1968 Cortisol & memory deficitsstress related high levels of cortisol damage neurons & hippocampus, can be reversed if stopped in time
- 4Lupien et al 1998 Cortisol & memory deficitslongitudinal study on the elderly
30% to high, after 5 years memory impairment & atrophe
memory (hippocampus) damage can be reversed unless it goes past the "point of no return" - 5Lupien et al 2002 Cortisol & memory deficitsAim: follow up on the first study to see if memory loss could be reversed with a drug
Procedure: Divided into group 1 & 2. 1 had moderate levels of cortisol at baseline, 2 had high levels of cortisol and already signs of impaired memory at baseline. Both groups given a drug (metyrapone) that prevented the secretion of cortisol. Then they did a memory test. After this both groups were given another drug (hydrocortisone) to restore their level of cortisol to previous levels. results were compared to levels in a placebo group.
Results: Group 1 had no problem restoring normal memoery function. group 2 had no memory improvement. hydrocortisone caused even more memory loss
